TERRY WHEATON - Calgary, Canada
Director of Goaltender Development
Head Goalie Coach & Lead Goalie Instructor
Terry Wheaton has been coaching hockey with a focus on goaltenders for +20 years. The head coach in Calgary, Canada for U10 programs and a goalie coach for all age groups from beginners to advance. Terry has trained at Vladislav Tretiak Elite School of Goaltending and Brian Hayward's clinics to continually improve his coaching techniques.
Terry Wheaton started playing goal in Calgary, Canada as a second-year peewee, due to a successful season, became a protected player of the Calgary Wranglers (WHL), played at a Jr. "A" level with the Calgary Canucks of the AJHL, and was selected to work out with the Canadian National development program in 1984, ending his career playing in the SAIT Trojans program. After a 10 year absence from hockey, while working overseas, Terry returned to play Elite Sr. Men's hockey in Calgary.
While living in Southern California, Terry coached U12 teams, was the head goalie coach for the Jr. Reign hockey club and the California Firstar 01 AAA Team based in Anaheim, coached by Craig Johnson and Scott Niedermayer. Terry practiced with the Ontario Reign of the ECHL and was used as a backup goaltender over three seasons after attending the Reign's first free-agent camp in 2008.
I moved to Dallas, TX in 2012 and coached at the Tier 1 AAA program Dallas Stars Elite with Billy Pye goaltending for 5 years before moving to Minnesota. During my time in Minnesota, I have provided private goalie training and worked with MyEdge Hockey Goaltending instruction with Mites to advanced levels.
Goaltending techniques have changed over the years, but the structure is still the same. I coach the goalie's strengths and add tools to their save selections. I focus on Skating, Puck tracking, and Save selection. Skating gets you in position, tracking the puck aids hockey IQ/reading the play to make saves using the correct save selection and control rebounds.
Focus, Position, Never give up.
